Kerry Volke, Survivor since 2015 My name is Kerry Volke. I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed at the age of 32. At the time my two sons were three years old and eight months old. Betty Emmons Barstow Hite, our beloved mother and grandmother was ill with breast cancer for 15 of her 50 years. She was one of the first recipients of chemotherapy in 1971 until her death the next year in 1972. Trish, Marnie, Sis and Susannah will be walking in honor of our dear sister-in-law, daughter, cousin and best friend, Wendy Nicholson Bailey. Wendy passed away on August 22, 2016 at the age of 47 after a courageous three and a half year battle with triple negative breast cancer. Wendy was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in January 2013. Wendy went through several rounds of chemotherapy and radiation and then a mastectomy at Sibley Hospital/Johns Hopkins in DC. It’s hard to describe how my mom’s diagnosis changed my family’s life. I just remember thinking that in the blink of an eye, we were part of this club that no one wanted membership to. Looking back, though, it was actually this very same club of women and families that provided unwavering support and inspiration to our family during those hard times.
