On a warm July night in 2007, I was at Fenway Park, watching the Red Sox with my friend Taylor Blaisdell, who owned a boutique in Concord, MA, chatting about a way to honor my mom’s breast cancer journey. While 2020 has been particularly difficult for many of us, Rebecca Melendez’s has been uniquely so. This year marked the tenth anniversary of her mother’s passing from breast cancer. That, combined with turning 35, “flicked a switch” within Rebecca that has set the course for much of her year. BRCA positive herself, Rebecca’s health reality consists of check ups (mammograms and MRI’s) every sixth months.

After decades of treating women for breast cancer at New England Medical Center, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Tufts Medical Center, Jack succumb to his own fight against cancer on September 2, 2020. Runway’s annual fashion show is one of our favorite events, and while we love that evening and cannot wait to bring this year’s re-imagined Runway to you, much of the work we do every day is in support of our Family Grant Program. This critical component of Runway funds families who have had an immediate family member pass away from breast cancer. Grants fund everything from summer camps to daycare, tutoring, extracurricular activities, school supplies, gym and wellness memberships, financial counseling, meal support and more in the aftermath of a loss (for more information about the grant application process, click here).
