Meet the Models, SoCal: Julie Henry

Julie Henry had saved for years to buy a condo with her husband and at 50 she was thrilled to do so. On the heels of such happiness however, a mammogram revealed breast cancer. Though caught early, it was aggressive, so she called her best friends up and all seven of them attended her meeting with the doctor. Presented with all the facts, Julie began connecting with other women who had faced diagnosis and one thing became clear, which was the fact that she “heard over and over that those who chose lumpectomies resulted in recurrences.” For that reason, she chose to have a double mastectomy. Always positive, Julie jokes that “I was big breasted so honestly, it was nice to have them smaller!”

A server at the time, Julie couldn’t lift trays for four months. Reliant on the funds from her job and with a 10 year old daughter at home, Julie’s friends stepped up. Together they put on an epic yard sale that raised $10k in one day. It was a massive show of community support that still touches Julie to this day. It’s what motivated Julie to join the Runway family and fundraise: “I love that this organization deals directly with families and their needs. People always asked me what can I do? My friends knew what I needed and made it happen. I can’t wait to support Runway who finds exactly what families need and makes it happen.”
