Nicole’s Story

Meet the Models, SoCal: Nicole

To the outside world, Nicole looked like she was okay. But internally, her world had been turned upside down. With no family history, no warning signs, and three children to care for, her diagnosis came as a total shock.

“I was scared, terrified really. I remember thinking, How could this be? I was young, healthy, and it didn’t make sense. My husband Tommy sat beside me, quietly crying with me. We were trying to process something that felt impossible.”

She still remembers that drive home in silence—how surreal it felt to face something so life-altering while the world around her continued spinning.

Though she didn’t require chemotherapy or radiation, Nicole’s path was still deeply complex. She underwent two major surgeries as a result of her breast cancer diagnosis: a complete gastrectomy (removal of her stomach) and a hysterectomy. In many ways, her healing came not only from the surgeries but from the steady presence of those around her.

“Tommy was my constant—always calm and reassuring. My kids gave me strength without even knowing it. My sister stayed with me after each surgery, and our extended family showed up with so much love and care.”

From meals and rides to simple moments of company, her community made all the difference. And looking back, Nicole realizes that what she needed most was something she didn’t always give herself: grace.

“Even without treatment, the diagnosis was overwhelming. I wish I had allowed myself to fully feel all of it—fear, uncertainty, even gratitude—without rushing to be strong.”

What surprised her most was the strength she uncovered along the way. Not the kind that roars, but the kind that shows up quietly—tired, afraid, and still moving forward.

“Strength doesn’t always look like confidence. Sometimes it looks like getting through the day when everything feels heavy. I didn’t know I had that in me.”

Nicole now carries that wisdom with her, and she offers it to others walking a similar path:

“Give yourself grace. All your feelings are real and valid. But don’t let them consume you. Take it one step at a time. You’re stronger than you think, even on the days it doesn’t feel that way.”

And her message to friends and family is just as powerful:

“Just because someone looks okay doesn’t mean they are. Check in—and keep checking in. Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is normalcy: distraction, laughter, quiet company. Don’t wait for them to reach out. Your presence, without expectations, means everything.”

This February, Nicole returns to the runway for a second time—grounded in gratitude, uplifted by her community, and stronger than ever.
