Inez’s Story

NYC Model, Currently in Treatment for Breast Cancer

Inez Montalvo was diagnosed with breast cancer on January 17, 2025—a moment that brought fear, uncertainty, and a wave of changes she never anticipated. From the physical toll of treatment to the emotional weight of the diagnosis, her journey has required both resilience and grace.

“I was honestly terrified.”

What stayed with her from that moment wasn’t just the fear—but the compassion that met her in it.

“My breast surgeon sat with me and my husband for about two hours going over everything.”

That care became a foundation as Inez moved into treatment, navigating chemotherapy and its many side effects. Like so many, the changes to her body were immediate and visible.

“Breast cancer has had a significant impact on my life—from losing my long curly locks to gaining about 25 pounds.”

And yet, even in the midst of those changes, Inez held onto a core part of who she is.

A runner at heart, she has always found strength in movement—and while treatment has slowed her down, it hasn’t taken that identity away.

“I’m a runner and love being active. The meds have slowed me down a bit, but I know when I’m done, I’ll be able to run again.”

Support came in many forms throughout her journey—friends who showed up, a husband who never left her side, and small comforts that made difficult days more manageable.

“My husband was at every chemo session with me.”

“My best friend came from Tennessee to help take me to chemo.”

Even the smallest details—like bringing a heating pad—became part of how she got through.

One unexpected source of strength came through her healthcare support system.

“My oncology nurse was an angel… I could text her with questions, and she made such a huge difference in my life.”

Through it all, Inez has continued to move forward—not just through treatment, but toward new experiences that bring her joy.

Since her diagnosis, she has made a conscious decision to say yes to things that challenge and inspire her.

She started voice lessons. She recently performed in her first show.

And now, she’s stepping onto the runway.

“I’ve decided I need to do more things that are exciting and challenging.”

Her perspective is both grounded and generous—offering simple, meaningful guidance to those supporting someone through cancer:

Be there for them. Don’t wait for them to ask for help.”

“Go to them with meals, help with transportation, check in often.”

And for those in the middle of treatment, her advice carries both honesty and reassurance:

“Your hair will grow back. Just go with it… you will probably look incredibly beautiful with no hair.”

Inez’s story is one of adaptation—of holding onto who you are while learning to move through what life places in front of you. It’s about finding strength in support, courage in trying new things, and belief in what comes next.

And through it all, she continues forward—steady, hopeful, and ready for whatever finish line lies ahead.
