Play for Runway: The Chapin School

The Chapin School is Playing for Runway!

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the captains of Chapin’s fall sports teams are bringing their school community together once again to Play for Runway — turning athletics into meaningful support for families navigating metastatic breast cancer and the loss of a parent.

Chapin’s connection to Runway began with a student reaching out to another student. In 2022, Savannah Phillips introduced Play for Runway to Chapin. Savannah had grown up in the Runway community after watching her mom go through breast cancer treatment when she was just three years old, and she wanted to give other young people a way to use their teams and communities to make a difference.

Chapin took that idea and ran with it. In 2023, all six fall teams joined together for the school’s first Play for Runway, with captains and coaches helping lead the effort across cross country, field hockey, soccer, tennis, and volleyball.

And what this community has accomplished is incredible.

In just two years of Playing for Runway, Chapin has raised $19,611.83 — $9,046.51 in 2023 and $10,565.32 in 2024 — to support the families Runway serves.

Now, Chapin is bringing Play for Runway back, led by the captains of its fall sports teams. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, these student leaders will rally their teammates and school community to honor those impacted by breast cancer while raising critical funds for families facing metastatic or terminal breast cancer, or grieving the loss of a parent to the disease.

Funds raised help Runway provide direct financial assistance and a community of support, helping families with groceries, household expenses, tutoring, camps, sports, activities, and other needs that keep children supported during an incredibly difficult time.

We are so to the Chapin captains, coaches, athletes, and families who have made Play for Runway their own. We cannot wait to see what they do this year.
