Janis’ Story

SoCal Model, Completed Treatment

Meet the Models, SoCal: Janis

By Caroline O'Donnell | February 2026

As an OB/GYN, Janis has spent decades guiding women through critical health decisions. She knows the statistics. She understands risk factors. But when it came to breast cancer, even she was surprised.

“You don’t think it will happen to you.”

An Unexpected Diagnosis

Janis was diligent about her health, regularly scheduling her 3D mammograms. It was during one of those routine screenings—at St. Joseph—that her cancer was caught early. Though she didn’t present with obvious risk factors, her diagnosis underscored an increasingly urgent truth: breast cancer can affect anyone.

“Breast cancer is more common now than ever, and it’s not just those with high risk factors. We don’t know why—but please, get your screenings.”

Treatment and Trust

Janis underwent a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, guided by a trusted care team of a surgeon, radiation specialist, and oncologist. She leaned on her family and friends for support, comforted by care packages filled with pajamas, flowers, and love. Her medical background helped her stay grounded in science—especially her gratitude for advancements in treatment and survivorship research.

“I believe in science. I’m so grateful for the research that’s made a difference in all of our lives.”

Strength in Reflection

Though her surgery was less daunting than she anticipated, radiation came with unexpected fatigue. Still, she remained focused on recovery and has since undergone native tissue reconstruction, which will be healing at the time of the show.

“Have faith. Don’t lose hope in your ability to heal.”

Janis credits her support system—and her own proactive mindset—for guiding her through treatment. She maintains a focus on wellness, activity, and nourishing food, and she urges others to bring in the people who can offer real emotional support.

A Voice from the Frontlines of Women’s Health

From her dual perspective as both a doctor and a patient, Janis brings a unique and powerful voice to the runway. She’ll walk this February as a survivor and an advocate, using her presence to remind everyone in the audience of one thing:

“Early detection may save your life—or the life of someone you love.”
