Erin Gonzalez’s Story

Erin Gonzalez is walking in Runway for Recovery to honor the extraordinary woman who shaped her life: her mother, Denise Callahan.

Denise was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Through surgeries, chemotherapy, radiation, and eventually a diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer while Erin was still in high school, she remained what Erin remembers most—a fighter. Cancer never defined the way Denise chose to live. As a single mother, she focused not on her own illness, but on making sure her daughter would be okay.

“My mom never let cancer define her,” Erin says. “She was resilient, optimistic, and determined to make sure I would be okay.”

Denise dedicated more than 30 years to teaching special education in the Boston Public Schools. Her compassion extended far beyond the classroom, creating a more accepting and inclusive world for countless students and families. Outside of teaching, she found joy in traveling, crossword puzzles, discovering new restaurants, and giving the most thoughtful gifts imaginable. Erin smiles remembering that no one personalized a present quite like her mother.

“She always made people feel seen. She was funny, incredibly thoughtful, and never worried about what anyone thought of her. She was simply herself.”

On August 17, 2024, just one week after Erin's 24th birthday, Denise passed away surrounded by family after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer.

The months surrounding her mother's passing changed every part of Erin's life. She left her job in another state to return home and care for her mother during her final weeks. When she chose to stay by Denise's side instead of returning to work, she lost her job. Since then, Erin has been navigating not only the grief of losing her best friend, but also the overwhelming responsibility of managing her mother's affairs, paying bills, and learning how to step into adulthood without the person who had always guided her.

“Sometimes I feel like everything is going to be okay,” Erin shares. “Other times it's confusing and overwhelming. My mom was the person who reassured me that everything would work out.”

Despite the heartbreak, Erin has discovered strengths she never knew she possessed. She has learned to advocate for herself, ask difficult questions, and make challenging decisions. Those experiences have inspired a new dream: pursuing graduate school to become a medical social worker, hoping to support other families navigating cancer the way compassionate professionals supported her and her mother.

Today, Erin carries her mother's legacy with her every day. She remembers Denise's generosity, her resilience, and her unwavering belief that kindness matters. She remembers the adventures they shared, the laughter, and the simple certainty that her mother was always in her corner.

Walking the Runway for Recovery stage is Erin's way of honoring the woman who taught her what courage looks like. It is a celebration of Denise's life, a tribute to the incredible mother who spent every day making the world a little brighter for others, and a reminder that the love between a mother and daughter does not end with loss—it continues to shape every step forward.

As Erin takes the runway, she does so carrying the greatest gift her mother ever gave her: the confidence to believe that, somehow, everything will be okay.
