Linda Phelan’s Story

How has breast cancer affected your life?

Linda Phelan has always described herself as blessed.

During her nine-month battle with cancer, Linda was surrounded by a big, loving family. Her husband, children, siblings, parents, and in-laws all helped carry her through, making sure she never felt alone in the fight.

She was also surrounded by an extraordinary community of women through her work as a trainer at Lexington’s Get In Shape For Women. Week after week, Linda saw the power of women supporting women.

That access to so many women gave Linda a mission: to demystify cancer, educate others about preventative screenings and early detection, and encourage people to take care of their bodies.

“If I can encourage just a few women to get their mammograms or help one person better understand how to support their newly diagnosed sister,” Linda shared, “then I feel that I have given back, even just a little.”

What has helped carry you through?

For Linda, the little things have always mattered.

She has found peace in time with her wonderful husband, in their big backyard, and in the ability to gather safely with their children, spouses, and grandchildren.

She has continued to make time for movement, including going to the gym, and has found joy in simple moments like golfing in the front yard and sitting on the porch with her husband.

Those moments of normalcy, connection, and peace have helped her stay grounded.

 

What has Runway meant to you?

Linda first walked the Runway as a survivor and later returned to share the stage with her two daughters, Stephanie and Meagan.

As a two-year survivor in 2017, Linda was excited to dance and laugh down the Runway beside them. For her, that night was a celebration of the love and companionship that helped her through treatment.

Her daughters walked in support of their mother, describing her as someone who defeated cancer and never lost her positive attitude.

“We hope that the strength she showed is hereditary,” they shared, “because then we would be set for life.”

One of Linda’s favorite Runway memories came when alumni models had their own moment on stage, then were able to sit in the audience and experience the full impact of the show.

“I was sobbing,” Linda shared. “It was so bittersweet. It truly reframes the narrative of breast cancer.”

What advice would you give someone trying to support a person newly diagnosed?

Linda believes honesty matters.

Rather than saying, “It’s all going to be okay,” which can feel far from comforting, Linda encourages people to be real and present.

“Be honest and say, ‘This sucks. Let’s get tea and get together. What can I do?’”

For Linda, support does not have to be perfect. It just has to be genuine, honest, and willing to show up.
